Annual Report of Metabolism and Target Organ Damage

2021 was a special year as the journal Metabolism and Target Organ Damage (M&TOD, ISSN: 2769-6375), after months of preparation, was successfully launched in April and officially published its inaugural issue in September.

Prof. Amedeo Lonardo, the Editor-in-Chief, together with the Editorial Board Members, indicate that the intention behind the launch of M&TOD is to provide an online platform for the publication of clinical, basic, and translational researches. M&TOD covers cardio-metabolic disorders per se and will specifically emphasize the role of these metabolic conditions as either effectors/amplifiers or consequences of the development and progression of injuries to target organs, including, but not limited to, the cardiovascular system, the liver, kidneys, and the pancreas.

Taking this opportunity, we would like to overview the whole year of M&TOD from the following perspectives:


1. Editorial Board Distribution

As of Dec 30, 2021, 56 researchers from 12 countries have joined us and served different positions in M&TOD, which include Italy, USA, Spain, South Korea, Portugal, Chile, UK, France, Egypt, Israel, Serbia, and Switzerland.

2. Readership Distribution

The readers are from 82 countries/regions. The top 10 most distributed countries/areas are the USA, China, UK, India, Italy, the Netherlands, Finland, Canada, Australia and Austria.  

3. Articles Publication
As of Dec 30, 12 papers (2 Original Articles, 6 Review Articles, 1 Systematic Review, 3 other types) have been published. Among these, the following papers have been cited in a short time (from Google Scholar):
Diagnostic accuracy of ultrasonography for the detection of hepatic steatosis: an updated meta-analysis of observational studies: an updated observational study yielded 12 studies with 2921 individuals through a 10-year-period through major databases.
Pearls and pitfalls in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease: tricky results are common: a review provides the framework for the clinician to review common diagnostic challenges in NAFLD and enhance patient care.
Precision medicine approaches in metabolic disorders and target organ damage: where are we now, and where are we going?: a valuable review for implementing future research regarding personalized/precision medicine in the field pertaining to MetS, NAFLD/MAFLD, and cancer development.

5. Special Issues
The Special Issue is a platform for scholars who are interested and enthusiastic in academic publishing and editorial activities. It provides an excellent opportunity to review a particular topic, examine poorly defined aspects, propose and develop new approaches, exchange views and encourage new lines of research. We are honored to have several active and highly qualified scholars in their respective academic fields.

Guest Editor: Prof. Ketan Dhatariya
Consultant Diabetes & Endocrinology, Honorary Professor, Norwich Medical School, University of East Anglia, Norwich, Norfolk, UK.
Prof. Dhatariya has several national roles in the UK. He is currently the Chair of the Joint British Diabetes Societies Inpatient Care Group and has led or co-authored several national guidelines on the management of various aspects of inpatient diabetes care, including the guideline on peri-operative diabetes care.

Special Issue: Inter-relationships Between COVID-19 and Metabolic Disorders
Guest Editor: Prof. Giovanni Targher and Dr. Alessandro Mantovani
Section of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism, University and Azienda Ospedaliera Universitaria Integrata of Verona, Verona, Italy.
Prof. Targher has been recognized by Expertscape as “World Expert in Fatty Liver” and placed in the top 0.0041% of scholars about “fatty liver” in the world over the past 10 years.

Special Issue: Hypogonadism in Cardiometabolic Disorders
Guest Editor: Dr. Daniele Santi and Dr. Angelo Cignarelli
Department of Biomedical, Metabolic and Neural Sciences, University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, Modena, Italy;
Department of Emergency and Organ Transplantation, Section of Internal Medicine, Endocrinology, Andrology and Metabolic Diseases, University of Bari Aldo Moro, Bari, Italy.
Both Dr .Santi and Dr.Cignarelli are raising stars with a strong relationship of the relevant network in the field of Hypogonadism in Cardiometabolic Disorders.

Special Issue: Mechanosignaling Pathways in Metabolic Dysfunction
Guest Editor: Prof. Gyorgy Baffy
Department of Medicine, VA Boston Healthcare System and Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School, USA.
Prof. Baffy, Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and Chief of Gastroenterology at the VA Boston Healthcare System. In 2014, he received a Fulbright US Scholar award to teach for a semester about obesity and related disorders at the University of Debrecen. He is the recipient of the Madaus Prize (Cologne, Germany) and the Hetényi Medal and Pro Optimo Merito in Gastroenterologia Award from the Hungarian Gastroenterological Association.

Papers from the four Special Issues will be issued in 2022. We are looking forward to fruitful results from these issues! More Special Issues focusing on metabolism and target organ damage will be announced in the coming months.

The Editorial Board of M&TOD is committed to guaranteeing the accurate and fair evaluation as well as prompt the published papers, with the aim of creating a solid and successful scientific journal. It is our goal to be highly qualified and recognized with excellent articles and Special Issues, and the effort of a dedicated and active Editorial Board. We appreciate all the contributions to this journal, and we are looking forward to building a fruitful 2022 together.
